Movie premier and learning July 4, 2008

Friday, Week 2nd
It is the last day of the second week. We are pushed to write logg while is it still “fresh”. Today we played our movies. All three of them were really good if we think of time and knowledge we had few days ago. I thought that I don’t have place to use movies at my wor but suddanly I realized that I have to think in bigger picture. My knowledge could help to Department not only to me. I learned basics and it is a good start if I want to improve my skills in making video. And maybe, if we buy equpment we can use videos in diferent parts of lectures.
After watching all videos we discussed about our work and experience. It was positive for all of us and some of us will try to find money to buy cameras for University because they find it very useful tool.
Nex part of today’s lecture was about learning and teaching stiles and reasons of doing that. We discussed that in groups. I was surprised by Simon’s story how he became a molecular biologist. His father showed him real situation when people are sick and they need help. Eventually he got sick and needed medical care. After that life experience he became what he is now. He and Jian want to help people to understand and learn more than they can right now. I think that both of them are doing great job.
I wanted to be teacher or librarian and I became teaching librarian. I had the time to think if I can improve my teaching skills and methods. And I know I can do better. I caught myself thinking about different aproach to excercise I done last semester. We have to think about lots of aspects when we are teaching. Every year we have smarter and smarter students. It’s challenge to teach them and to prove that althaugh I am sometimes younger then my students they can learn things from me.
Today was day of exchanging of teaching and learning experiences.
National Library and final product – movie July 3, 2008

Thursday, Week 2nd
First part of the day was really interesting for me. We went to visit National Library and ABV-untvikling. That was wonderful opportunity. I heard lots of things about Scandinavian librarianship and after seeing a vivid example of it I saw that everything is as I heard and read. I had lots of questions and I was happy that I can ask someone about digital repository which I am interested in. I left my email and I got promise that article about it will be provided. Until today I wasn’t aware of the fact that we have all resources available. Sometimes it is hard and expencive to find papers you need for your work, even when you are educated for searching. I decided to take few days for research on topics of my interest, at the Oslo University and National Library.
I learned about ALM organization. I read about it in some articles but never got enough time to search deeper. I like the projects a lot. All the things ABM-utvikling is doing is reflected to the society. It is multicultural but ethnic groups are not separated, they are very well included in society. I thought that it is not possible to have librarians, archivists and museum workers in one organization but it seams that Norway did great job in this area.
National Library itself looks very well organized. I think this visit was more useful for me that to the rest of the group. I have some background and I have knowledge about organization of Croatian National Library to compare. I wish I could say that it’s the same in my country. National Library of Norway has the same role as other national libraries so I won’t repeat it. I was surprised that they use outsourcing for gaining the radio casting. I think that collaboration between institutions which are leaders in their field makes librarians job easier. The same is with the idea of getting newspapers in digital form directly from newspapers publishers. That will save time and money for the library.
After the inspirational visit to the NL we shortly discussed with Mr. Lars about differences between libraries, archives and museums. I think that most of people don’t even know when and how to use archive and don’t understand that library is library even if it’s in digital world.
Although, I think that other colleagues could have difficulties with following presentation of ABM-utvikling and maybe it wasn’t that interesting for them because they are in different subjects. I can say that I have more clear vision about this organization and about it’s importance to the community. Heritage institutions have to serve public, and their projects showed us that they are fulfilling their mission.
I noticed that most of LATINA participants take their assignments really seriously and they think deeply about subjects. I like Vera’s definition of museums and I think that we accomplished to fulfill each others definitions and we (as a group) are able to discuss certain tops which were brought up in lectures.
After the short discussion we had to finish our movie. Editing the movie is really hard job. If you want the movie to be perfect you have to have more time than few hours a day. But, in the end, with a little help of our technical support, everything turned out great. We are all satisfied with the result. We used video editing software Pinnacle which is quit simple but we still had some problems because we didn’t have enough time to try everything by ourselves. Tomorrow morning is premier. As I already mentioned, I don’t know if I be able to implement movie into my lectures but it was helpful to try to make one. And one thing I know for sure, an am not the right person for making the movie. I don’t like camera. I prefer photos. It was a long day…

Trigger and few other things… July 1, 2008

Tuesday, Week 2nd
Today I enjoyed presentations of photo stories of my colleagues a lot! All of them (us) did excellent job for only one day. I was impressed by drawing attention on few normal things such as toilet, sink or trash can. We take lots of things for granted. I also learned about difficulties for understanding cultural habits of European people. I feel the same but in less drastic way. I like that kind of learning. I always compare my habits and culture to the country I am in.
My group made photo story about comparison of traditional and digital libraries and about changing environment. We got good feedback from professor and colleagues. We made few mistakes but the whole group is happy and satisfied with the result.
Beside this part, we did more (b)logging with professor Tord and I subscribed on rss feed to all blogs from my classmates. I like that a lot. It is easy to track changes and see what other people have to say about their day and learning process. Again I can compare what was new for other people and see which part was useful for others as it was for me.
Before I came to Oslo, I didn’t want to finish my official blog because I wasn’t sure about the structure and some other things. Now, I am thinking about it a lot and I think that I will do it before I go back home.
We also had lecture from Mr. Lars about distinction between information, knowledge and learning. We all agreed about definitions, although some of us have different perspectives according to these subjects. We had a little problem with questionnaire which wasn’t usable but thanks to smartboard Mr. Lars continued writing on it instead of showing us our definitions. That turned to be interesting, too.
Mrs. Kristin talked about trigger. I have never heard about it before. We also got few tips about triggers from technical aspect. It looks good theoretically but tomorrow we have to do it in practice. It will be totally new experience for me because I never used camera by myself.
We are working in groups again but with few new members. We were discussing our theme. I think the idea is quit good. We’ll wait and see what will happen tomorrow. I have learned a lot today, again. And I like that feeling.
Looking forward to see and participate in making trigger.

Monday, Week 2nd
This is second week at LATINA Course. Since now I have learned a lot. From blogging to logging. I met people from different cultures and I realized that we are very difficult group to teach.
We have different teachers with different styles but all of them are doing their best to teach us new things. I never used Picasa and Photo Story and I like what I have learned. I never thaught that I can use blog in teaching. Last week I made my own blog and I am proud of it. I would like to make blogs for each part of my courses that I am teaching.
I like the way we are thaught. We never get everything finished. We have to explore tools and environment by ourselves and we have support all the way.
The hardest thing for me today was working in groups without knowing the language of my group collegues. It was difficult to explain and to understand. But, in the end, everything turned fine.
